What remains of the value and meaning of images and objects when they are presented outside their original, historical context? And what hidden stories are concealed in the materials with which they were made? These are the questions underlying the international group exhibition Echoes of presence. The substantive starting point of the exhibition is the work of Kazakhstan-born Ghent artist Veronika Bezdenejnykh. For her layered monumental paintings, which balance between figuration and abstraction, she finds inspiration in Transylvanian carpets, Byzantine mosaics and personal memories. In the exhibition, her work enters into a dialogue with works by Koen Hauser (NL), Michelle Akiki Jonker (NL/UG), Daan Paans (NL), Mar;n Toloku (GH) and Bas de Wit (NL). In their work, which consists of painting, sculpture, photography and video, they all refer to visual cultural-historical traditions. Rooted in different parts of the world, they let stories from the past resonate as echoes in the present.
