"In the work of Delft visual artist Edith Bons two worlds come together: Indonesia and the Netherlands. Her work is a reflection of a constant need to define herself in the no man's land between two cultures. In Indonesia she felt a strong affinity with certain traditional art forms ( wayang, batik, woodcarving.) There she discovered her own visual language.A symbol she uses repeatedly is the checkered black and white motif (poleng) that originally occurs in Bali, where it symbolizes cosmic unity. For Edith Bons this motif became to a kind of statement: "Where am I myself, between that black and white."
